A guest lecture "Development of Ukrainian graphics and spelling in a historical context"

On May 5, 2026, a guest lecture by Maria Lvivna Druzhynets, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Language and Language Training of Foreigners of I. I. Mechnikov Odesa National University was held at the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature.

The lecture was dedicated to the development of Ukrainian writing - from the most ancient forms of graphics to modern spelling. The speech examined the key stages of the formation of the Ukrainian alphabet, outlined the influence of historical events on the formation of language norms, and highlighted the main changes in spelling. The spellings of famous Ukrainian writers and their contribution to the formation of the language norm were also considered.

The lecturer focused particular attention on the unique letters of the Ukrainian alphabet, the evolution of spelling systems, starting from the 11th century, as well as on the important processes of language codification at the beginning of the 20th century. The importance of the formation of modern Ukrainian spelling as an important factor in preserving cultural heritage and national identity was separately emphasized.

The lecture was attended by 1st and 2nd year students, as well as teachers of the department.

The event aroused keen interest among those present and contributed to deepening knowledge of the history of the Ukrainian language and updating issues of language norms in modern society.
